Rives Granade
Lightfast Swine, 2024
Graphite, dyed gesso, gouache, ink, pigment, and oil on canvas
36 x 36 in
91.4 x 91.4 cm
Layering over previously unfinished painting, Rives Granade painted Lightfast Swine (2023-24) as an excavation of form and color. Shapes that reference animal body parts float across the surface as if blown about by air. Orange and yellow gouache underpainting emerges through the layers, effectively resolving the age of the original composition and the newer biomorphic elements. Granade references Willem de Kooning’s painting Excavation (1950), and similarities in spatial organization, interacting planes, and calligraphic lines can be observed. Lightfast Swine is also reminiscent of certain paintings by Arshile Gorky, as lines blur and subconscious forms materialize.
