In Chinese philosophy, “wuwei” roughly translates to “nonaction” – or the practice of taking no action that is not in accord with the natural universe (3rd and 4th century early Daoism). Rives Granade’s studio practice is deeply inspired by philosophical discourse that spans time and space, geography and history. An exercise in presence and acting as a channel, the painting Wu Wei (2022) embodies Granade's flow.

Granade comments, "The main form of the painting resembles a dragon head. Embedded with in this head are pieces of language, constellations, map forms, and other symbols. It is a pile of marks assimilated perfectly onto and into a canvas to become one thing."
