City plazas, office parks, and churchyards are the backyards of apartment dwellers raising children in urban apartments. The artist explains, “A park isn’t always nearby, so every garden or churchyard becomes a play opportunity.” In Saint Rita’s Garden (2023), Turner-Uribe’s eldest daughter holds a flower up to the viewer while the younger sister looks on from the background of an early evening visit to this garden. The oversized rose pushes up against the foreground of the canvas, its peachy yellow paint composed of translucent layers of texture plays with perspective and scale.
