Still Life with Aphrodisiacs and Friends, 2018

Created during an artist residency, Ohan Breiding’s Still Life with Aphrodisiacs and Friends (2018) features an uncanny table setting replete with raw meat, vegetables, wine, and a hand gripping the edge of the table. Beautifully set but with a mysterious tone, inanimate objects meet the living in what Breiding describes as a quasi-love affair between objects and performers, between still life and portraiture.” Breiding elaborates, “This series also marks the starting point of a deep friendship with the other two artists at the residency, whose bodies are present in this photograph, where the food that was used for these still lifes during the day was always cooked and eaten together in the evening. The process of starting this initial project while thinking about scarcity ended up becoming a communal gathering for and with friends filled with abundance.”
