Kelly Wall
Beside Myself, 2023
Playing with both physical and emotional perspective, Kelly Wall’s Beside Myself (2023) features a dual chaise longue chair splitting at the seat. While evoking a bodies in repose, Wall explains, “The chairs yield a jarring experience of a figure coming away from their shadow, seemingly split under the discomfort of the light.” Further, “Ready-made aluminum lawn chairs, both a common and iconic symbol, are ripe for the viewer to project a lived experience onto. Using the materials of light and space, glass webbing shifts in luminosity throughout the day, creating an ever-changing “looking” experience.” On glass: “I used some art glass in a sculpture I made for my MFA show at CalArts and fell in love with the material, so highly fabricated in its raw state and its inherent qualities both being fragile and really enduring. The way it shifts in light throughout the day, the fact that it won’t fade in time from the sun, and its ability to withstand the elements and exist outside. I ended up taking a class at Stained Glass Supply Pasadena after graduating in 2019 and really got into it at home during the pandemic.”
