Growing up Colombian American in Sun Valley, Idaho, Sofía Jaramillo spent time in and around the historical Sun Valley Lodge. As the first ski destination in North America, the lodge popularized the concept of ski vacations, combining world-class slopes with a glamorous après-ski lifestyle to draw celebrities, world-class athletes, and wealthy visitors from its inception in 1936. Nostalgic, historical photographs of these stylish visitors line the hallways of the lodge. In 2020, Jaramillo was roaming the halls when she noticed that the photographs primarily featured white individuals, with one notable exception being an image of Louis Armstrong. As the first ski resort in the United States, these images have represented American ski culture for decades. They have told the world what skiing in America looks like, and they have largely excluded people from different racial and cultural backgrounds. Jaramillo has long questioned the lack of diversity in these scenes and, through her work as an editorial and commercial outdoor photographer, knows they do not represent the people seen on the slopes today.
Drawn to the aesthetics of these 1930s–1950s winter sports photographs, Jaramillo pulled together a community of people of color in the outdoor and fashion industries as well as athletes from all over the United States to recreate these historical images of ski culture in Sun Valley. Supermodel and founder of Native Youth Outdoors Quannah Rose Chasinghorse arrived from Alaska; Judith Kasiama, founder of Colour the Trails traveled from Vancouver; and stylist/casting director Terumi Murao flew from New York. The models, producers, and stylists arrived in Sun Valley in the spring of 2023 and again in 2024 to share accommodations, wake up at the crack of dawn, and spend all day outside inspired by the collective goal to create images that celebrate diverse cultures through the lens of these historical ski photographs.
Blending storytelling and portraiture while trusting photography’s power to depict truth and act as a catalyst for change, the project is a genuine collaboration between Jaramillo, her subjects, and her team. Posing on skis, relaxing with food and drinks at a lodge, or sitting back in Sun Valley’s iconically warm and bright winter sunshine, Jaramillo’s figures radiate joy, pride, and strength in the nostalgic, mountain atmosphere characteristic of après-ski. In creating the images that Jaramillo wishes she had seen as a kid, A New Winter encourages conversation around the origin of winter sports culture, offering a reimagined history and hopeful future that celebrates the richness and variety of those who contribute to it.
