EXPANDED FIELD

EXPANDED FIELD

October 2 - October 30, 2021
OCHI Aux, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

This fall, OCHI will open a third gallery space, OCHI Aux, two doors down from the current Los Angeles location at 3305 W Washington Blvd. This expansion marks a defining moment in OCHI’s unique history.

Originally established in the 1970s in Boise, Idaho as what we refer to today as an artist-run space, OCHI has always been a family business. This latest iteration preserves the legacy borne of the outlook learned living in a rural mountain town—an attitude kindred to that of Los Angeles’ art scene—as we form a community of inclusion that fosters resourcefulness and offers space to mutually thrive. We learned from the gallery founder, artist, and art professor Denis Ochi, that art is education and the gallery is a rhizomatic nexus of relationships—with artists, collectors, art writers, curators, neighborhoods, the public, and like-minded colleagues.

Today, OCHI is led by Pauli, Denis’ daughter, who founded Ochi Projects in 2015 in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The gallery represents more than a dozen artists, with extensive programming in Sun Valley, Idaho, Los Angeles, California, and abroad. The shifting post-pandemic landscape has revealed for OCHI its perseverance, strengths, and ambitions. We are proud of our histories. Our ethos is manifesting. After this past year and half, our future unfolds as new strategies emerge.

Preceded by collaborative ventures such as Condo, Ruberta, Independent, and Vacation, OCHI Aux opens a new chapter of collaboration. OCHI Aux will invite select galleries to coexist in this new space. Proximity strengthens community organically and the company we keep speaks for itself. Alongside gallery programming, OCHI Aux will feature presentations by Mrs. Gallery (Maspeth, NY), Superposition Gallery (Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, FL), and Hesse Flatow (New York, NY), with additional galleries to be announced.

To inaugurate OCHI Aux, the gallery presents Expanded Field, a group exhibition that explores OCHI’s recent histories and present program with a glimpse of the future. The exhibition will be on view from October 2 through 30, 2021 with an opening reception on Saturday, October 2nd, from 2-5pm.

Expanded Field will include works by Aaron Michael Skolnick, Adam Beris, Adrienne Elise Tarver, Anna Valdez, Arden Surdam, Ariel Herwitz, Aryana Minai, Avery Wheless, b chehayeb, Ben Sanders, Brian Wills, Caitlin Lonegan, Chris Bogia, Christopher K.
