A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song -Chinese Proverb
The idea that one horizontal line can represent the earth and sky still baffles me. My job is to tell the story. Either the one I’m dreading to tell or one that is too familiar. What came out is this longing to help and be helped. We need each other. If it’s crossing borders, or boundaries we never thought we could get through, or it’s someone just keeping the light on for you. There are always three stories to a painting. The story you want people to see, the story you hide to reveal at a later time, and the real story being the truth. Earthlings get stronger through struggle. It’s how we’ve managed to not die out. Our masks have helped. And taking them off is hard.
Ochi Projects is pleased to present Earthlings, a solo exhibition of works by Daniel Gibson. The work will be on view from February 23 – March 23 with an opening reception Saturday, February 23 from 6-9pm.
Daniel Gibson (b. Yuma Az, 1977). Daniel grew up in El Centro CA, and other surrounding towns that border Mexicali B.C. Gibson’s inspiration starts while growing up in factory housing in Plaster City, CA, where his father worked. The vast desert horizon and emptiness lent its path to imagination and wander. Gibson’s output is bred by his indispensable draw towards creation, something he views as a therapeutic and expressive flow of visions and beliefs, real life situations and overwhelming dreams, comprised of a combination of elements incomparably extricated with a whiff of vato attitude.
