BEN SANDERS
Ochi Projects presents I Come to the Garden Alone, a solo exhibition featuring works by Los Angeles based artist Ben Sanders. The exhibition is on view from March 3 – April 14 with an opening reception Saturday, March 3 from 6-9 pm.
Sanders explores internalized fears, spirituality, and the human condition through a series of works on paper and paintings executed over the past two years. The paintings stem from the works on paper, which Sanders creates while sitting in church. Many depict personified characters, insects or cheap plastic Teleflora vases (an object that Sanders obsessively collects from thrift stores). Sanders places these characters into narrative and surreal settings. Despite their cartoonish quality, the works suggest a deep level of introspection. Through metaphor and symbol, they become a collection of visual parables meant to unearth hopes and anxieties, both universal and unique to Sanders’ own experience.
Ben Sanders was born in 1989 in Arcadia, California. He received his B.F.A. from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His work has been exhibited throughout the country, most recently at Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles, Asya Geisberg in New York, Left Field in San Luis Obispo, Carl and Sloan in Portland, and LVL3 in Chicago. He has shown internationally in London and Vancouver.
