Devin Farrand’s Roam (2024) is a sculpture comprised of two parts, a carved marble salt lick and a carved soapstone beer can. Reminiscent of found objects in the mountain west, Farrand displaces these items from their sagebrush fields to consider them in a new light. Nestled amidst rugged terrain, a salt lick becomes a gathering point. In Idaho’s open range ranching, farmers herd their cattle back to their barns in the fall season, walking just past Farrand’s cabin on the way home. Salt licks are strategically placed to point the animals in the right direction, drawing them towards their barn with essential vitamins and minerals. Rough cattle tongues shape and polish the supplement, and they are often left behind for other wildlife to find. The beer can also embodies the passage of time – blasted by sand in the wind and buried only to resurface decades later. The pairing of these two objects is a venture into a western still life.
