Devin Farrand
Horizon (Currant), 2024
Often associated with intensity and emotion, the red in Devin Farrand’s Horizon (Currant) (2024) proffers a moment of contemplation. Evoking berries found on bushes in the forests of central Idaho as well as the color of aspen leaves in late autumn, Horizon (Currant) juxtaposes aluminum anodized to a deep, velvety red with the aura of yellow zinc plated steel. An industrial process used to create a functional finish on screws, bolts, and other hardware, yellow zinc plating adds durability, a resistance to rust, and a phenomenal multi-colored shimmer that appears to change with a viewer’s position and available light. Since each treated metal reflects or absorbs light differently, this work plays with the viewer’s perception of color and depth.
