A flat, light green plate of anodized aluminum sits above a sandblasted plate of yellow zinc plated steel, within a frame of the same steel. The works overall dimension is almost square and the top plate is about twice the height of the bottom one. The yellow zinc plated steel below has horizontal cloud like sandblasting marks and the whole piece reflects ambient light.

Although yellow zinc plating is an industrial process, Devin Farrand is excited by the resulting palette and its similarity to colors found in the landscape. Horizontal sandblasting on yellow zinc plated steel rests below a green, anodized aluminum field in Horizon (Meadow) (2023), recalling the changing weather and light over Idaho’s green valleys. With an abundance of wildlife and plants, and little human presence, these vast stretches of land inspire pause and contemplation, while the ethereal gestures of sandblasting echo the wispy ripples of a breeze through a field tall grass before a summer storm.
