Loose expressive mark making characterizes Devin Farrand’s Horizon (Day break) (2023), with its oblique sinuating scrolls rising with the rosy dawn. As the sky transitions from the slumbering depths of night into day, Farrand’s sand-blasted clouds catch the first light. Ephemeral and transient, the blushing sky meets land visualized by iridescent yellow zinc plated steel in the bottom of the frame. The effect of yellow zinc plating is unpredictable—Farrand can’t control where these rainbows will appear. Pairing these electroplated pieces with the semi-reflective, saturated colors of anodized aluminum, offers further contradistinction as light seems to reflect back at various speeds—a multivalent infinity within a now ascertainable horizon.
