Blue, anodized aluminum conjures the crisp mountain sky of the Idaho wilderness in Devin Farrand’s Horizon (Clear Skies) (2023). To create the ethereal, wispy forms that resemble drifting clouds, Farrand uses an abrasive blast cabinet to erode the surface of the metal before the anodizing process turns the aluminum blue. Paired with the iridescence of yellow zinc plated steel, the cerulean blue of Horizon (Clear Skies) expresses an ethereal absence of time—and memorializes staring up at the sky, lost in thought. Dreamily conjuring the future, Farrand draws attention to horizons as physical sites of juxtaposition where atmospheric matter meets mineral configurations and organic lifeforms, aligning horizons with markers of time and catalysts of existential reflection.
