tomboy texas theater (2024) references a few memories of the “performative girlhood” of going through puberty, though b chehayeb did spend a little time with theater in high school. Pink curtains, the shadow of a trophy cast by a stage lights, and flowers thrown up onto the stage at the end of a performance are accompanied by a pair of pink chones—a nonbinary Spanish word for underwear that chehayeb uses to remind the viewer that gender is a social construction. "i don’t think its parody or critique when you are that young, i think it’s just survival. you see it more as performance when you get older and look back or when you consciously decide to perform it as social strategy" —b chehayeb
