caldo with lime (2024) is a painting in which b chehayeb recalls tasting a caldo—a traditional Mexican chicken soup—with way too much lime. caldo is a part of many memories specifically because it was a comfort dish to eat when sick, when the family is over, etc. there’s a problem in trying to recreate these sensations and memories as an adult, i never learned to cook well and am bad at remembering/saving recipes. this causes tension with my mother and i when i always inevitably ask her for the recipe. food in the work usually represents cultural things for me, but the older i get they tend to reflect traditional ‘womanhood’ and domestic failings. —b chehayeb
