COOPER COX
Cooper Cox is known for his elaborate oil painting techniques that create sculptural surfaces. With a background in design, Cox finds himself drawn especially to texture. Exploring the rich detail and layering of oil allows him simultaneous creation of crispness and rejection of the static. Cox depicts a reality just palpable enough for us to relate, while his abstractness invites viewers to reshape notions of perception. Themes of love and loss echo throughout his work, and the changing natural environment provides constant inspiration for both narratives.
Growing up in Sun Valley, Idaho, Cox developed a deep appreciation for nature and a sense of wonder influenced by the vast skies, endless mountains, and old-growth forests that seem to stand against time. Shifting clouds, wind, light, and seasons serve as the backdrop for steadfast trees, mountains, and homes in Cox’s work. His paintings reflect his love for the natural world and its mirror of the human experience.
Cooper Cox (b. 1978, Sun Valley, Idaho) received his dual BA in philosophy and sociology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Cox spent the earlier part of his artistic career directing Outside Magazine shows & events and in his creative design firm collaborating with brands including Hermès, Tom Ford, and Nike. Cox’s paintings have been exhibited at venues including Gavlak Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; The Bunker Artspace in West Palm Beach, FL; and Nick Weber Studio in New York, NY. Cox lives and works between Brooklyn, NY and Ketchum, ID.
