AJ Collins’ sculptural panel, Redecorator (2025), composed of materials ranging from plywood, cork, and steel to glass, vinyl, and Killz primer, presents a deliberately flattened surface painted in striated layers—an application that mimics the mechanical gesture of tank treads or bulldozer tracks across a razed field. Echoing both the devastated terrains of World War I's no man’s land and the sanitized expanses of suburban development, the work invokes a tense duality between destruction and construction. Small embedded “truth windows” punctuate the surface, revealing a gridded assemblage of domestic and industrial materials—window seals, hardwood samples, and archival tank imagery—offering a partial x-ray of the wall-as-threshold and calling into question the stability of boundaries, whether architectural, historical, or psychological.
