Perhaps the most pared down of the large paintings in Adam Beris’ exhibition, Fantastic Best Wishes, Lemon Thief (2024), features a pair of hands holding a pair of eyeballs. Set in a landscape at night, the top of a brick wall frames the bottom edge of the painting, with sprigs of thickly painted weeds growing up through the cracks. A row of glyphs from Beris’ long-standing series of grid paintings hovers above figure and foreground. While open to interpretation, Beris often cites slot machines as inspiration for his grid paintings—"when you don’t have a winning hand, there is a row of symbols staring back at you that don’t quite make sense.”
