DEVIN FARRAND
Ochi Projects is pleased to announce our representation of Devin Farrand, and to present Felled Forms, our first solo-exhibition of the Los Angeles-based artist’s work. The exhibition is on view from August 8 – September 26, 2020 and can be visited by private appointment at the gallery, and online on Gallery Platform Los Angeles from August 6 – 12, 2020.
Upon entering the gallery, a towering tryptic of aluminum chromatic panels creates a vast expanse, a seemingly limitless horizon of warm brass tones with glints of pinks and greens. In the legacy of abstraction, the sumptuous, golden light humming just below Farrand’s surfaces, gestures towards the precipice of embodied perception. With an exacting precision, Farrand divulges his intention, a meditation on material, an immersive attentiveness to the intricacies of matter.
The perceptual nuance of the work is developed through a process that pays tribute to the artist’s personal lineage–building cars, boats and musical instruments–while setting out to create a distinctive vernacular. Farrand employs specific techniques and treatments to generate his work, achieving a wide variety of surface colors and textures, yet all comprised solely of aluminum.
Exhibited alongside the large chromatic panels are four smaller sandblasted pieces titled
Reflections. Representations of columns and car fenders, which to Farrand are past examples of humankind’s ingenuity, shift in and out of focus as a viewer navigates the space. As with the larger works, the artist’s intention is to have Reflections shift the viewer’s sense of time, to slow the impulse for distraction and hastiness. Farrand’s rendering of silence, of felled forms, is an evocation of intuitive steadfastness, a commitment to commanding beauty.
