Benjamin Langford’s practice explores the idea of nature after the “death of nature.” Utilizing a romantic, pictorialist approach, he breathes life into scenes that could be considered corrupted or impure experiences of nature. These scenes range from dioramas in museums, butterfly greenhouses, falling trees in an arboretum, animals in a zoo, or the twisting branch of a deadened bonsai. In his analytic, anthropologically-charged landscapes, Langford’s images present precarious illusions - controlled naturalistic environments bred for the public’s consumption. Rather than sublime and virgin forests, his pictures transcribe the world that exists when the wilderness has gone.

Benjamin Langford (b. 1992, Connecticut, USA) received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. His work has been exhibited at venues including Special Special, Fu Qiumeng, and The Meeting in New York, NY; Megan Mulrooney in Los Angeles, CA; Baader-Meinhof in Omaha, NE; and OCHI in Sun Valley, ID. Langford’s exhibitions have been featured and reviewed in publications such as Artforum, Harper’s Bazaar, Wallpaper, Paper City Magazine, and Fräulein Magazine. Langford lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
