Tanya Brodsky investigates the poetics of malfunction and the material residues of built environments. Her practice mines the tension between archeological artifact and commercial display, evoking a haunting intimacy with spaces we pass through daily but rarely consider. Pacific Design 1 (2024) is part of a series of drawings of doorknob displays at high-end architectural hardware stores, based on snapshots taken by the artist on site. Brodksy explains, “Both the display and the photographs of it deal with some disembodied version of a similar utilitarian object: one before it enters its regular function, and one after. To me, the drawing/ photo and casting play similar roles in terms of generating an isolated imprint of an object.”
