Emily Marchand mixes California pansies and poppies with French poppies the ceramic wall work poppies and pansies at midnight III (2024). French red poppies, or coquelicots, are symbols of remembrance from WWII. As a peace flower, they offer to carry on the memories of those lost. Pansies often symbolize love, and the edible flowers are found throughout California and Marchand’s own garden. Their mix with California and French poppies floating in a surreal, dreamy blue honors the landscape in which Marchand works.
