estrella apostrophe, 2023
b chehayeb’s series tomboy tejano blues is magnificently star-studded! What began as the lone star of the Texan flag has morphed into an all-seeing nonbinary entity tumbling through memories, with a star’s five points representing limbs and a head. As chehayeb athletically pushes paint around each surface, her stars can fuse, stack, twist their shapes to become less legible, and can shed their skins as they evolve, as they do in Estrella apostrophe (2023). ever since i learned to read i have been obsessed with punctuation and its role in the structure of a sentence. the way it changes the volume, the tone, and the breath in an idea. they are little drawings, directing the letter circus. Anne Beattie has a quote where she talks about falling in love with her own punctuation, I feel this in my own work. —b chehayeb
